Appointed by the Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre, The Creative Innovation Unit (CIU) was imagined as a tool for organisational development through leading innovative programmes and projects. At the time the organisation had a great deal of funds for physical refurbishment but very limited resource for refreshment of the organisation and capacity building. The Unit brought in external partners to test the capacity for change and innovation of existing structures and systems and where appropriate adjust existing ones or build new ones. This was to increase the overall sustainability of the organisation in the long term. The unit was to operate over a three year period. In fact the Innovation Unit became an income earning cost centre within the first year. One of the highlights was a programme to develop the creativity of scientists in India to enable better problem solving skills through which to tackle the agricultural problems that India might face in the years to come.
